An old man is lying in the road in Viridian City
Pick up Oak's Parcel in the Viridian Poke Mart, take it back to Professor Oak in Pallet Town, then return.
A man stops you leaving Pewter City toward Route 3
Beat Brock in the Pewter Gym for the Boulder Badge.
The path to Route 5 and the Cerulean Cave is guarded
Go north over Nugget Bridge to Bill's house on Route 25, help Bill, then come back.
A sleeping Snorlax blocks Route 12
Get the Poke Flute from Mr. Fuji after clearing the Pokemon Tower, then play it next to Snorlax.
A sleeping Snorlax blocks Route 16
Get the Poke Flute from Mr. Fuji after clearing the Pokemon Tower, then play it next to Snorlax.
A tree blocks the Vermilion Gym
HM01 Cut from the captain of the S.S. Anne (after the rival fight on board) and the Cascade Badge to use it.
The sailor will not let you onto the S.S. Anne
Bill gives you the S.S. Ticket at his house on Route 25 after you help him.
The guards will not let you into Saffron City
Tea from the old lady on the ground floor of the Celadon Mansion. Give it to any guard and all of them stand aside.
Rock Tunnel is pitch black
HM05 Flash from Professor Oak's aide in the Route 2 gate house, once you have caught 10 Pokemon, and the Boulder Badge to use it.
A ghost blocks the Pokemon Tower stairs
Silph Scope from Giovanni after clearing the Rocket Hideout under the Celadon Game Corner.
The Rocket Hideout lift will not move
A Rocket Grunt on B4F drops the Lift Key when beaten; pick it up from the floor.
Doors in Silph Co. will not open
Card Key on 5F of Silph Co., near the west side.
You cannot reach the Safari Zone's Secret House
Head straight for Area 3 from the entrance; the Secret House is at the far end. Buy Surf here, then use it with the Soul Badge.
The Cinnabar Gym is locked
Secret Key on B1F of the Pokemon Mansion, north of the island's gym.
The Viridian Gym is closed
Beat Blaine on Cinnabar Island, then Bill's friend Celio sends you to One Island; come back to Viridian after the Sevii Islands One to Three quest.
You cannot sail to the Sevii Islands
Bill gives you the Tri Pass after you beat Blaine; the Rainbow Pass for islands Four to Seven comes from Celio after the Elite Four and 60 Pokemon caught.
The Route 23 guards keep sending you back
All eight badges. The last two are Blaine (Cinnabar) and Giovanni (Viridian).
The Cerulean Cave guard will not move
Beat the Elite Four, then finish the Sevii Islands Ruby and Sapphire quest for Celio; the guard leaves.
You cannot trade with Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald
Beat the Elite Four and catch 60 Pokemon for the National Pokedex, then bring Celio the Ruby (Mt. Ember) and the Sapphire (Dotted Hole, via the Rocket Warehouse).
