Pokemon Version Exclusives Explained

Every mainline Pokemon game launches as a pair, and each version locks certain species behind its cartridge. You cannot catch a Larvitar in Pokemon Sword no matter how long you search — it only appears in Shield. Trading with the other version has been part of the series DNA since Red & Blue in 1996.

Coverage Across Generations
