Pokémon version exclusives explained

Every mainline Pokémon game launches as a pair, and each version locks certain species behind its cartridge. You cannot catch a Larvitar in Pokémon Sword no matter how long you search - it only appears in Shield. Trading with the other version has been part of the series DNA since Red & Blue in 1996.

Coverage across generations

  • 12 version pairs tracked from Red & Blue through Scarlet & Violet.
  • Exclusive lists include both base-form Pokémon and their full evolutionary lines.
  • Some pairs also split legendary Pokémon - Scarlet gets Koraidon while Violet gets Miraidon.
  • Later generations expanded exclusives to include regional forms and Paradox Pokémon.

Before buying a game or starting a Nuzlocke, check which version has the Pokémon you want. Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet have some of the longest exclusive lists in the series, making the choice between versions more impactful than ever.
