Every mainline Pokemon game launches as a pair, and each version locks certain species behind its cartridge. You cannot catch a Larvitar in Pokemon Sword no matter how long you search — it only appears in Shield. Trading with the other version has been part of the series DNA since Red & Blue in 1996.
Coverage Across Generations
- 12 version pairs tracked from Red & Blue through Scarlet & Violet.
- Exclusive lists include both base-form Pokemon and their full evolutionary lines.
- Some pairs also split legendary Pokemon — Scarlet gets Koraidon while Violet gets Miraidon.
- Later generations expanded exclusives to include regional forms and Paradox Pokemon.
Before buying a game or starting a Nuzlocke, check which version has the Pokemon you want. Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet have some of the longest exclusive lists in the series, making the choice between versions more impactful than ever.
