Pokemon Natures: Stats, Flavors, and Strategy

Every Pokemon is born with one of 25 natures, and it cannot be changed after capture (though Mints in Gen VIII+ can override the stat effect without altering the actual nature). Picking the right nature is one of the most fundamental competitive decisions, directly affecting a Pokemon's performance in every battle.

How Natures Affect Stats

20 natures boost one stat by 10% and lower another by 10%. The remaining 5 -- Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky -- are neutral and change nothing. The 5x5 grid above maps every combination: rows represent the boosted stat, columns represent the lowered stat, and the diagonal holds the neutral natures.

Flavor Preferences

Each non-neutral nature also determines which berry flavor the Pokemon likes and dislikes. This ties directly to stat-boosting berries (Figy, Wiki, Mago, Aguav, Iapapa) and contest conditions. A Pokemon with an Adamant nature (+Attack, -Sp. Atk) likes Spicy flavor and dislikes Dry. Click any nature in the grid above to see its full flavor profile.

Common Competitive Natures

  • Adamant (+Atk / -Sp.Atk) -- standard for physical attackers
  • Jolly (+Spd / -Sp.Atk) -- physical attackers that need to outspeed
  • Modest (+Sp.Atk / -Atk) -- standard for special attackers
  • Timid (+Spd / -Atk) -- special attackers that need to outspeed
  • Bold / Calm / Careful / Impish -- defensive natures for walls and tanks
