Shiny Odds Calculator
Calculate shiny probability by hunting method, encounters, and Shiny Charm.
How Shiny Odds Work in Pokémon
Shiny Pokémon have alternate color palettes and sparkle when they enter battle. The base odds are 1/8,192 in Gen II through Gen V and were doubled to 1/4,096 starting in Gen VI. Each encounter rolls independently, so hitting the odds on attempt #1 is just as likely as attempt #10,000.
Shiny Charm and Extra Rolls
The Shiny Charm, obtained by completing the Pokedex, adds two extra shiny rolls per encounter in most games. This brings Gen VI+ base odds from 1/4,096 down to roughly 1/1,365. The charm stacks with other methods, making it the single most impactful item for any shiny hunter.
Popular Shiny Hunting Methods
- Masuda Method - breed two Pokémon from different real-world languages; roughly 1/683 odds in Gen V+
- Chain Fishing - reel in consecutive hooks without breaking the chain; caps at about 1/96 in Gen VI
- SOS Chaining - build long chains through SOS calls in Gen VII for up to 13/4,096 odds
- Mass Outbreaks - Legends Arceus outbreaks offer approximately 1/158 base odds
- Dynamax Adventures - the best fixed odds in any main game at 1/300 (1/100 with Shiny Charm)
Use the calculator above to see your cumulative probability after any number of encounters. At full odds (1/4,096), you need 2,839 encounters for a 50% chance and 18,842 for 99%.
