How shiny odds work in Pokémon

Shiny Pokémon have alternate color palettes and sparkle when they enter battle. The base odds are 1/8,192 in Gen II through Gen V and were doubled to 1/4,096 starting in Gen VI. Every encounter rolls independently, so hitting the odds on attempt #1 is exactly as likely as on attempt #10,000.

The extra-rolls model

Modern games boost shiny odds by rerolling the shiny check. Each boost adds rolls, and the per-encounter probability is 1 - (4095/4096)^rolls (with 8191/8192 in the 1/8,192 generations). The Shiny Charm adds 2 rolls, so full odds with the charm is 3 rolls, about 1/1,366. The Masuda method is 6 rolls (1/683.1), and Masuda plus charm is 8 rolls (1/512.4). Guides often quote the additive shortcut instead, for example 8/4096 = 1/512; the compounded value differs by less than 0.1%, and this calculator compounds every method the same way so the numbers stay comparable. Two methods do not use rolls at all: the Poke Radar follows its documented patch-chance curve (about 1/99.9 at chain 40 in BDSP, 1/199.8 in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum) and Dynamax Adventures are a flat 1/300, or 1/100 with the charm.

Shiny Charm and where it applies

The Shiny Charm, earned by completing the Pokédex, adds two extra rolls per encounter in every game from Black 2 / White 2 onward, and three rolls in Legends: Arceus. It stacks with catch combos and lures in Let's Go, with sandwiches and outbreaks in Scarlet / Violet, and with SOS chains, chain fishing, and breeding. It does not boost Poke Radar shiny patches, and no charm exists in Gen IV or earlier. The calculator applies it per method, so you always see the real number for your game.

  • SOS chaining (Sun/Moon): chain 31+ with the charm reaches 15 rolls, about 1/273.5
  • Catch combos (Let's Go): combo 31+ with a lure and the charm is also 15 rolls, about 1/273.5
  • Chain fishing (XY/ORAS): +2 rolls per streak point up to 20, so 43 rolls with the charm, about 1/95.7
  • Sandwiches and outbreaks (Scarlet/Violet): up to 8 rolls with a level 3 sandwich, 60 outbreak KOs, and the charm, about 1/512.4
  • Mass outbreaks (Legends: Arceus): up to 32 rolls with perfect research and the charm, about 1/128.5
  • Dynamax Adventures: the best fixed odds in any main game at 1/300, or 1/100 with the charm
