Gen 9 Mirror Herb Shortcut

In Scarlet/Violet, Pokémon can learn egg moves from picnic partners using Mirror Herb, without breeding. Have the Pokémon hold a Mirror Herb and picnic with another Pokémon that knows the desired move. The target Pokémon must have an empty move slot. This works even between Pokémon that don't share egg groups.

How Egg Move Breeding Chains Work

Egg moves are moves a Pokémon can only learn through breeding, passed from a parent that knows the move to the offspring. The parent and target must share at least one of the 15 egg groups. When no direct parent exists, you need a multi-step breeding chain using "bridge" Pokémon that belong to two different egg groups.

How This Tool Finds the Shortest Chain

The chain finder uses a BFS (breadth-first search) algorithm to explore egg group connections and find the fewest breeding steps needed. A 1-step chain means a Pokémon in the same egg group learns the move naturally (by level-up, TM, or tutor). A 2+ step chain means you must first breed the move onto an intermediate Pokémon, then breed that intermediate with your target.

Gen 9 Mirror Herb Shortcut

Starting in Generation 6, either parent can pass egg moves -- not just the father. Generation 9 introduced the Mirror Herb, which lets a Pokémon learn egg moves from a picnic partner without breeding at all. The target holds the Mirror Herb and must have an empty move slot. This works even between Pokémon that do not share egg groups, bypassing the traditional chain entirely.
