About the Contest Moveset Optimizer

Winning a Pokémon Contest comes down to picking the right four moves from your Pokémon's movepool. This optimizer evaluates every possible 4-move combination and ranks them by total appeal, so you don't have to guess which moveset scores highest.

How contest scoring works

Each of the 937 moves in the game has a contest type and appeal value. Moves matching the contest category receive a +1 bonus heart, making same-category moves significantly stronger. The five contest categories are:

  • Cool, favored by Spicy-loving natures
  • Beautiful, favored by Dry-loving natures
  • Cute, favored by Sweet-loving natures
  • Clever (Smart), favored by Bitter-loving natures
  • Tough, favored by Sour-loving natures

Normal contests vs super contests

Normal Contests (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, ORAS) use both appeal and jam values. Higher appeal earns hearts while jam deducts hearts from opponents. Super Contests in Gen IV (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, BDSP) dropped the jam mechanic entirely and use a simplified appeal system.

Toggle between the two modes above to see how movesets change. The optimizer breaks ties by lowest total jam in Normal mode, giving you movesets that score high without exposing you to retaliation. The strip under the table shows the ceiling for all five categories at once, so you can tell at a glance which contest a Pokémon is actually built for.
