Pokémon move changelog, tracking balance changes across generations
Game Freak doesn't just add new moves between generations, they rebalance existing ones. A move that dominated one metagame might get nerfed in the next, or a forgotten move might receive a power buff that makes it suddenly viable. This tool tracks every recorded change to the game's 937 moves.
Types of changes tracked
- Power adjustments, Blizzard dropped from 120 to 110, Knock Off rose from 20 to 65
- Accuracy changes, several moves gained or lost accuracy between generations
- PP changes, affecting how many times a move can be used per battle
- Type changes, Karate Chop was Normal-type in Gen 1 before becoming Fighting, and Bite switched from Normal to Dark in Gen 2
- Effect chance changes, secondary effect rates shifted on some moves
Why this matters
If you play older generation formats, you need to know what a move's stats actually were in that era. A Gen 3 damage calculation with Gen 9 move power gives you the wrong answer. Every recorded change is listed above as an old value, a new value and the version group where the change landed, so search for a move or filter by the field that changed.
