Base Cobblemon does not have breeding. As of version 1.7.3, the current release, there is no egg item and no daycare in the mod itself. Breeding comes from the Cobbreeding sidemod, which turns the pasture block into a working daycare, and that is how nearly every modpack and server does it. This guide covers exactly what Cobbreeding adds: how eggs are produced, how they hatch, what the offspring inherits, and which Pokemon can pair up.

Is breeding in base Cobblemon?

No, and it never has been. The groundwork is clearly in place: every one of the 1,025 species files in 1.7.3 carries egg groups and an egg cycle count, and the mod tracks "eggs collected" and "eggs hatched" player statistics with matching API events. Those hooks exist for sidemods to use, not for a hidden base-game feature. The developers have said breeding will come eventually, but it is not in 1.7.3 and it is not in the announced feature list for 1.8 either, which centers on TMs, alpha Pokemon and habitat structures.

The pasture block in the base mod is a free-roam pen tied to your PC, not a daycare. Two compatible Pokemon left in it will do nothing on their own. Cobbreeding is the piece that makes them produce eggs.

How breeding works with Cobbreeding

Cobbreeding is a free sidemod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge that extends the pasture block. It supports Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 and is updated for current Cobblemon 1.7.x releases.

  1. Place a pasture block and put two compatible Pokemon in it: same egg group, opposite genders, or any breedable Pokemon plus a Ditto. Pokemon from different owners can breed together.
  2. Click the breeding toggle in the pasture UI. After a random delay of 8,000 to 14,000 ticks at default settings, roughly 7 to 12 minutes, an egg appears in the nesting area at the bottom of the block.
  3. Pick the egg up from the nesting area. A pasture holds up to 5 eggs by default, and hoppers can pull eggs out of it for automatic collection.
  4. Keep the egg in your inventory to hatch it. The timer only runs while a player is carrying it. A 20-cycle egg takes about 10 minutes at default settings, and a party Pokemon with an ability like Flame Body cuts hatching time in half.

Egg cycles come from each species' own data and range from 5 for fast hatchers like Magikarp up to 120 for the slowest species, so hatch times vary a lot by Pokemon. If you want faster or automated hatching, the separate Cobblemon Incubator addon adds an incubator block that speeds up hatching, filters eggs, and auto-collects from a pasture placed next to it.

What the offspring inherits

TraitHow it inherits
IVsThree random IVs pass down from the parents by default. A Destiny Knot raises that to five, and Power items guarantee their specific stat passes from the holder.
NatureRandom unless a parent holds an Everstone, which passes that parent's nature.
AbilityNormal ability slots inherit as usual. A parent with its hidden ability can pass it down, and there is a small configurable chance for the offspring to roll its hidden ability on its own.
Egg movesAny move either parent has ever learned is available to the egg. This is looser than the main games: the moves do not need to be in the parent's current move set. A Mirror Herb can also teach egg moves.
Poke BallThe offspring hatches in the same ball as its parent, matching the main games.
FormRegional forms pass directly from the parents. The main-series trick of locking a regional form with an Everstone is not implemented.
Shiny oddsMasuda method: parents with different original trainers multiply shiny odds by 4 at default settings. A Crystal-style boost from shiny parents is also available, applied twice if both are shiny.

Egg group reference

Two Pokemon can breed when they share at least one egg group. These counts come straight from the Cobblemon 1.7.3 species data, so they reflect exactly what the mod uses. Ditto pairs with anything outside the Undiscovered group, and Undiscovered species, which include most legendaries, mythicals and all baby Pokemon, cannot breed at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can you breed Pokemon in base Cobblemon?

No. As of Cobblemon 1.7.3, the current release in August 2026, the base mod has no breeding: there is no egg item and no daycare. Every species already carries egg group and egg cycle data, and the mod's API even ships egg collection and hatching events, but the mechanic itself is not in the game yet. Breeding is also not part of the announced 1.8 feature set, which focuses on TMs, alpha Pokemon and habitats. To breed today you install the Cobbreeding sidemod.

How long does a Cobblemon egg take to hatch?

With Cobbreeding at default settings, an egg from a species with 20 egg cycles hatches after about 10 minutes of sitting in a player's inventory, roughly 30 seconds per cycle. The timer pauses whenever the egg is not in someone's inventory. A party Pokemon with a hatch-boosting ability like Flame Body halves the time, and the eggHatchMultiplier config can speed it up further.

How do you breed shiny Pokemon in Cobblemon?

Cobbreeding supports the Masuda method: if the two parents have different original trainers, the egg's shiny odds are multiplied by 4 at default settings. It also supports a Crystal-style boost where a shiny parent improves the odds, applied twice if both parents are shiny. Server owners can tune both multipliers in the config.

Does Ditto work for breeding in Cobblemon?

Yes. With Cobbreeding installed, Ditto pairs with any breedable Pokemon regardless of gender, exactly like the main games, and the offspring is the other parent's base form. Ditto cannot pair with Undiscovered-group species. Two Dittos produce nothing by default, though a config option can let them generate a random egg.

Egg group data extracted from Cobblemon 1.7.3. Cobbreeding behavior reflects its current builds for Minecraft 1.21.1 as of August 2026; server configs can change timings and shiny multipliers.
